Frequently asked questions
What is a podiatrist?
Holder of a doctorate in podiatric medicine, a podiatrist is an expert in the treatment of all pathologies affecting the feet. Depending on the treatment he deems most effective, this foot health professional provides treatments and valuable advice for relieving biomechanical, dermatological, infectious, and other problems. The podiatrist is qualified to diagnose and treat your feet. He is also authorized to prescribe medication if necessary.
What is the difference between a podiatrist and an orthotist?
The podiatrist (as well as the doctor general practitioner) are the only two health professionals who can diagnose your foot problems and prescribe a foot orthotic. The podiatrist can also, thanks to his certification, proceed with the manufacture of orthotics.
The orthotist-prosthetist works as a technician. He is responsible for the manufacture of orthotics prescribed by the podiatrist or the doctor.
What is the difference between a podiatrist, a podiatrist and a foot care nurse?
To qualify as a podiatrist, you must have a degree in podiatric medicine and be an active member of the Ordre des podiatres du Québec. The podiatrist is the only one with a doctorate and comprehensive medical training in foot anatomy. It can diagnose and treat various diseases and conditions of the foot. His degree allows him to prescribe medication and provide more thorough care at your feet.
Are the fees covered by the RAMQ?
Podiatric medicine is a private practice. The costs are therefore not covered by the Quebec health insurance plan. That said, your care is covered by most group or private insurance.
Who can see a podiatrist?
Anyone with feet can consult in podiatry. If you have any concerns about your skin, nails or foot pain, please contact us. Our team will be happy to answer your questions.
When to see a podiatrist?
You can consult a podiatrist for the general health of your feet, whether you have symptoms or not, as well as in prevention or in response to a condition. That said, it is important to consult at the first sign of an anomaly or if you have any questioning. If you have any doubts about the health of your feet, contact us quickly to take charge of your condition. Rapid treatment could speed up healing and avoid more severe complications.
Do you need a doctor’s referral?
It is not necessary to have a medical reference to have a consultation with one of our podiatrists. You can make an appointment with or without a referral from your family doctor. The podiatrist has the skills to take full charge of your feet.
